Abstract

21,032. Consortium fiir Elektrochemische Industrie Ges. Nov. 9, 1908, [Convention date]. Hydrogen is produced by the action of caustic alkali on silicon in the presence of lime, which increases the rapidity of the reaction. The alkali may be replaced by such mixtures as sodium carbonate or sulphate and lime, and the lime may be replaced, wholly or partly, by calcium compounds that form lime in the liquid with liberation of hydrogen, such as calcium hydride or silicide. In an example, an intimate mixture of silicon and calcium hydroxide is gradually introduced, with continual stirring, into an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide heated in an iron generator. Mention is made of the production of hydrogen by the action of an aqueous solution of sodium or calcium hydroxide alone upon silicon.
