Impact pulverizers.-The rotary disks a, Figs. 1 and 2, which carry the pivoted beaters or hammers e of a crushing, pulverizing, or disintegrating machine, are partly encircled at the lower portion by a grid or grate f formed of angular bars so arranged as to form opposite each hammer a V-shaped groove or recess f with a similar inverted V-shaped groove f on the underside, the pulverized material escaping through spaces f<3> between the bars. The ends of the hammers extend into, and nearly to the bottoms of, the grooves f<1>, and the bars are preferably slightly eccentric to the disks a so as to give a greater clearance to the hammers at the entrance and exit ends of the grooves. The bars are secured at each end to rails g, and are adjusted by a bar h. The shale, stone, &c. falls irom the hopper k on to an inclined grate or grid i arranged over the disks a, and through the spaces i<1>, between the bars of which the hammers e pass. The hopper k has hinged doors l with counterweights m, and the front edges of the hammers may be bevelled so as to give a cutting blow through the upper grate i. The front wall of the inlet portion of the machine is preferably inclined, to prevent the material from banking up ; the dust and finer particles may be removed from the machine by a fan or blower
