Impact pulverizers.-In crushing, pulverizing, or disintegrating machines of the type in which pivoted hammers 4 carried by rotating disks 3 on a shaft 2 work over a semicircular grate 5 composed of V or like shaped bars, the crushed grain, sugar, salt, &c. is carried by the air current produced by the hammers up an outlet passage 9, which is arranged at the opposite side of the machine to the feed-shoot 7 and is fitted with a screen 10 closed at the upper end. The screen is surrounded by a casing 11, and the fine material passing through the screen falls down on to inclined shoots 12 leading to an outlet 13. The screen is carried by bottom and top plates 10', 10<2> connected by rods 10<3>, the whole resting loosely upon the top of the outlet 9 so as to be readily removable. A bag or balloon 14 at the upper end of the casing 11 filters the escaping air, and the screen is preferably tapped at intervals by a vibrating arm operated from the driving-shaft. The feed shoot or hopper 7 has a pivoted and counterweighted or other door 8, and the hammers 4 work between a series of inclined bars 6 arranged above the disks 3. If two grades of fineness are desired, the larger particles may be allowed to pass through openings at the bottom of the grate bars, but if only a very fine division of the minerals &c. is required, the grate bars may be placed close together so as to close the openings, or a grooved surface without openings may be used.
