Impact pulverizers.-In a crushing, pulverizing, or disintegrating machine with revolving beaters or hammers 1 working in the spaces between the bars of a curved grid or grate 4 at the lower part of the machine, one or more curved plates or bars 7 with rows of teeth 7<1> on their inner faces, forming paths in which the beaters work, are provided at or near the top of the machine. The plate 7 is pivoted at one side or end 8 and supported by one or more bolts 9, so that it can be adjusted to compensate for wear, the upward movement of the plate being limited by bolts bearing against its rear side, and its inward movement by a piece 12. The teeth 7<1> are staggered or arranged out of line, and may be inclined on one side from the front lower edge to the face of the plate to strengthen them. As shown, the toothed plate extends only over about one-quarter of the casing; but it may extend more or less over the upper half of the machine and may be made in more than one piece or section, each with its adjusting-means. The stone, grain, &c. is fed on to a coarse grating 6 through which the beaters pass, or it may pass directly into the machine. The bottom grid-t 4 may be in two portions so that a coarser grid can be used on one half than on the other to obtain two degrees of fineness in the crushed material, and the upper plates 7 may also be made in two portions with the teeth on one half set farther apart than those on the other half.
