Abstract

Retort and like doors. - An air or gas tight door for furnaces, retorts and the like of the kind in which the door is pivoted to its frame by a swinging link to allow the door a limited movement at right-angles, to the plane of the door opening is pressed against its seat by a pivoted bar l, Fig. 1, the ends of which are tapered and engage with brackets n on the door frame. When the door is of substantial size, projecting ribs are formed on the door above and below the pivot m to engage the lower surface of the bar l and provide fulcrums between the pivot m and the brackets n. The ribs may be provided with stops to limit the movement of the bar. Lugs d on the door are connected by a pin c to an intermediate member b, which is hinged to the lugs h on the door frame. The member b, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with stops j on its rear face which engage with the frames and limit its rotation on the hinge-pin f. Packing may be arranged in a groove formed in the machined seating of the door to assist in making a tight joint.
