Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of ; cars and cabins.-A tubular body 1, which may be tapered as at 2 at one or both ends, forms a strong backbone to the machine, and is divided into compartments or decks to contain the motors &c. Supporting-planes 5, 6 project from the sides and are constructed of series of laths pivoted along their longitudinal centre lines. Or the planes 5, 6 may comprise overlapping sections which can be drawn one over another; or the sections or the entire plane may be flexible and capable of being wound on rollers. Propelling.-Lifting-propellers 10 are arranged either above or below the planes 5, 6 ; and one or more propellers are provided for driving the machine horizontally. Steering and balancing may be effected non- automaticallv by operating an elevator plane 8 and rudder 9, and opening or closing the laths of the planes 5, 6. The plane 8 may also be constructed in sections operated in a similar manner to those of the planese 5, 6. Automatic balancing is effected by the use of one or more gyroscopes acting through gearing on the sections of the planes 5, 6, or on the elevator 8 or its sections, or on the rudder 9.
