[Cognate Application, 2767/10.] Cylinders.-Relief valves are arranged in the distributing valves, the cylinder ends, or the steam passages of simple, compound, or other engines, whereby the excess fluid - pressure is returned to the steam-chest in simple engines, and to the low-pressure receiver in the case of compound or like engines. The high-pressure piston valve, Fig. 3, is provided with auxiliary ports A and relief valves B arranged on seats provided in the packing-ring C. The valves B are provided with differential areas to maintain a certain ratio of pressure between the highpressure and low-pressure steam. The differential lift valves may be replaced by ball valves. In the flat slide valve, Fig. 5, the relief passages A<1> are controlled by ball valves B held in place by a yoke E which embraces and actuates the valve. In the cylinder of the simple engine, Fig. 10, the valves B are arranged in the cylinder end and cover. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 14, the valves B are arranged in a casing within the valve-chest and communicating with the cylinder passage G. The Provisional Specification also states that the steam ports of the flat slide valve may extend from one side to the other.
