437. Tiddeman, E. S. Jan. 7. Starting.-Simple and compound multiple-cylinder engines are started by connecting the same or opposite ends of adjacent cylinders together. The ends a<1> ... a<4> of the cylinders a of a simple twocylinder engine, Fig. 2, are provided with pipes connected to ports c<1> ... c<4>, Figs. 3 and 4, in a valve-chest which is provided with an adjustable disk valve f. The valve is provided with ports g, g<1>, Figs. 3 and 5, and is held to its seat by a spring or by steam pressure. The cylinder ends are placed in communication by the adjustment of this valve. In a modification of the device, adapted to a compound engine with two low-pressure cylinders, the valve-chest is provided with six ports. Valves in duplicate, operated by a common lever, are provided on engines having two highpressure and two low-pressure cylinders.
