Abstract
17,302. Bevis, R. R., and Clayton, M. G. July 26. Indicating, optical devices for.-In apparatus for measuring strains and deducing therefrom stresses, such as those due to the axial thrust in a propeller shaft, the relative movement between the free end of a long rod 2, attached to the shaft at the other end, and some other point upon the shaft is magnified by the spring plates 7, Fig. 4, which are fixed at one end to an adjustable block 8. The separation of the spring plates rocks pivoted mirrors 9 through connexions 15 and deflects a beam of light along the screens 22, Fig. 7; stationary mirrors 10 are also provided for purposes of comparison. In a modification, the mirror 9, Fig. 9, is rocked by means of a pin 15 and a spring-plate 7, which is fixed between abutments 35, 8 on the rod 2 and casing 6 respectively. The mirrors 9, 10 are in this case arranged tangentially with respect to the shaft 1 and rod 2. In another modification, Fig. 13, a beam of light from the lamps 23 passes through a pivoted tube 37, which is adapted to be turned bv the movement of the spring plates 7. The tube is provided with suitable screens to prevent the passage of any light-rays except those passing through the tube, and these are received by an eye-piece 38 mounted upon an arcuate scale 39
