Calorimeters.-The calorific value of solid fuel is measured in a calorimeter of the type in which flowing water is used for absorbing the heat of combustion, by supplying the solid fuel to the oxygen progressively in order that the combustion may be sufficiently slow and at the same time complete. A form of apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a fuel-container b of incombustible material of substantially cylindrical form with a neck tapering upwards, oxygen being supplied to the fuel c through tube m. The products of combustion in the chamber a are carried off through tubes r, and impart their heat to water entering at i and leaving at k.
