Abstract

12,204. Gaunt, J. May 24. [Addition to 17,014/08.] Sails.-In a device of the type described in the parent Specification, in which an inverted V-shaped aeroplane, mounted on a mast, is used to support part of the weight of a cycle &c. while travelling, the aeroplane is made collapsible and is connected to a lever pivoted to the mast-head by which the aeroplane is adjusted. The aeroplane is formed of two roofplanes 1, 2, Fig. 1, and two floor-planes 3, 4, which are hinged to one another at c<1>, c<2>, c<3>, c'. The side hinges c<3>, c<4> are connected by springs U, and the upper and lower hinges are connected by detachable rods S. The front part of the plane is mounted in a trough 0, Fig. 3, which is pivoted at N to a lever G. Cords A, B connect the front and rear of the plane to the arms Q, D of the lever G, and springs R connect the sides of the plane to the arm D. The lever G is pivoted at K to the mast 5, and is adjusted by a thumb-screw M to vary the inclination of the aeroplane. The cords A, B restrict the veering movement of the aeroplane; the springs R allow the aeroplane to rock slightly in the trough O.
