Abstract
17,014. Gaunt, J. Aug. 13. [Cognate Application No. 18,397, A.D. 1908, dated Sept. 2.] Sails.-One or more aeroplanes A of ?-shape, provided with end sections comprising an horizontal plane C and a vertical plane B, B', are adjustably mounted on a boat to exert a lifting effect as the machine is propelled, and to serve as a sail in rear winds. The aeroplane A, Fig. 2, shown attached to a cycle, is supported by a universal joint d on a mast D or bracket. The sides of the plane are connected by springs E, E<1>, Fig. 5, to the mast, so as to allow the plane to turn in the direction of the wind. The longitudinal inclination of the plane is adjusted by a cord e, fixed to the top of the mast and passing over guide-pulleys e<1>. In the case of a motor-boat, the central plane may be fixed, and its vertical and horizontal planes B, C may extend along its whole length ; also planes arranged alongside the central plane may be vibrated through gearing from the motor shaft. The number, size, or angle of the planes may be so increased as to lift the boat into the air. The flight may be continued by connecting the motor to feathering propellers K, Fig. 12, arranged at each side of the machine. The inclination of the aeroplane A may be adjusted by a hand-wheel m<1> which turns a screw M passing through a swivelling nut connected to the hinged mast D. The Provisional Specification states that the plane may be of M section.
