Abstract
10,422. Lanchester, F W, May 3. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, construction and arrangement of steering; propelling. -The aerial machine is steered by a front elevator pivoted at its forward end and normally out of action, and by a multicellular tail, adjustable by means of irreversible gearing about a transverse axis, and placed behind the propeller so as to absorb the angular momentum of the currents from the propeller. The machine is provided with main supporting-planes a. Outriggers s support the front elevator q, which is adjusted when required by a hand-lever t. The rear elevator f preferably consists of an hexagonal member having six cells j, and is mounted on an axis k. The tail is adjusted by worm or other reversible gearing which holds it in its adjusted position.
