12,256. Herring, A. M. May 24. Gyroscopic apparatus. -Relates to means for balancing aeroplanes automatically by the gyroscopic action of propellers or by separate gyroscopes. The propellers 12, Fig. 4, are so mounted that, while driven by bevel - gear and universally-jointed shafting from the motor 15, they can swing transverselv about vertical axes 21 but not longitudinally. If the machine tilts fore-and-aft, the gyroscopic action of the propellers causes them to swing transversely. In swinging, they pull upon wires 11, which tilt planes at the front and rear of the machine so as to restore equilibrium. Gyroscopic wheels, separate from the propellers, may be employed as shown in Fig. 3. The gyroscopes 35, swinging only in a transverse vertical plane, control the fore-and-aft tilt of the machine by pulling on wires 11, which tilt restoring planes as before. Another set of gyroscopes 45 swinging only in a longitudinal vertical plane control transverse tilt of the machine by tilting restoring - planes 44 in opposite directions. The gyroscopes can be manipulated by the aeronaut to tilt the machine.
