Abstract
22,844. Nowotnick, J. P. Oct. 4, 1909, [Convention date]. Aerial machines with aerostats. - A r i g i d aerostat is p r o v i d e d with a central longitudinal air shaft b in which the propelling- apparatus is placed. Propelling and steering.-The propellers c may be driven by electromotors d, the mechanism being placed entirely within the shaft b. An adjustable cowl or head-piece f at the front of the air shaft can be turned to draw in air from different quarters in order to steer the aerostat. The cowl is made of metal rings covered with canvas, and the front ring is acted on by springs tending to thrust it out and extend the cowl. Four ropes are attached to the front ring, so that, by tightening one rope and releasing the other, the cowl takes up a position such as that shown in Fig. 2. Means are provided for locking the front ring in position. Steering is also effected by a vertical rudder g. Anchoring.-The supports of the aerostat fit into sockets in the ground, and are held therein by pins to anchor the vessel.
