Abstract

8332. Vanderlip, L. C. April 6. Two - stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, cooling.- The engine is provided with ports in the cylinder and passages in the piston, by means of which the explosive gases are warmed, and the cylinder and piston cooled, during working. The cylinder carries a water-cooled projection 5, and the piston 7 has a chamber 11 which receives the projection 5 and forms the explosion space. At the end of the up-stroke, the ports 22 are uncovered, the port 26 registers with the port 14, and mixture is drawn through either or both of these into the space below the piston. At the end of the downstroke, the ports 25 are uncovered, and the ports 24 register with ports 23. The charge, entering by ports 25, sweeps out the exhaust through ports 24, 23. Cooling-ribs are provided between the inner and outer walls of the piston. Modifications are described in which the ports are arranged in slightly different positions from those illustrated, and in which the piston induces a circulation of air in the projection 5 for cooling purposes.
