Lathes.-In machines for cutting screws, spirals, &c. on wood, of the kind in which a former-screw 5 coupled to the blank 13 by means of a chuck 10 is rotated by a hand-crank 14 or by power, and a fixed thread-key 6 projecting into the thread of the former-screw causes it to be traversed longitudinally to carry the blank 13 past a fixed cutter 12. The thread-key 6 is rotatable, and is clamped in any angular position to fit a thread of any pitch on the former-screw. A guide or rest 11 for the blank is situated in front of the cutter.
