Abstract

5578. Eisenstein, S. March 8. [Addition to 10,019/08.] Electric oscillations, producing; spark-gap apparatus.-Relates to the method of producing high-frequency oscillations for wireless telegraphy described in the parent Specification, in which a sparkless oscillation-circuit is caused to oscillate by uni-directional impulses consisting of the first half-oscillation of a condenser circuit containing a spark-gap, subsequent oscillations being prevented by including a valve rectifier in the condenser circuit. According to the present invention, the combined rectifier and spark-gap consists of two electrodes at different temperatures, one electrode being cooled and the other heated by a flame or by spark-discharge. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the electrode 1 is a vessel of good conductivity cooled by the liquid contained in it, and the electrode 2 is heated by a spirit flame or by a small auxiliary spark-gap. When a strong supply-current is used, special means for heating one electrode is unnecessary. When a high-tension continuous current is used, the spark-frequency and the capacity can be adjusted so that a musical note is produced at the receiver, thus allowing messages to be received in spite of atmospheric disturbances. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a double valve is used, the cooled electrode 1 being connected to the middle point of the transformer secondary, and the other electrodes 2, 2<1> being in circuit with separate condensers 4, 4<1> and a common inductance 9, so that first one and then the other oscillation-circuit becomes operative according to the momentary direction of the alternating current, as described in Specification 5334/07.
