Abstract

Casings; driving-gear.-In engines in which the cylinder is connected to the crank-shaft bearings by tension members, so that the crank casing and the frame are relieved of stress and may be of light construction, these tension members in the form of bolts are housed in tubes, which are cast with or secured to, the crank chamber. In the example shown, the crank-shaft v is out of line with the cylinder axis, and the lower half h of the bearing support is connected to the cylinder by five bolts, of which two pairs f, g, are equidistant from the crank-shaft, and the fifth bolt m is at the point furthest from the shaft. In a multicylinder engine, only two bolts f, g are used between two cylinders, these bolts engaging with abutting or overlapping flanges on adjacent cylinders. The crank - chamber may be of aluminium.
