Abstract

3399. Menck, H. F. Feb. 11. Scoop-arm machines.-The bottom flap of the scoop is connected with braking-mechanism so that the scoop may be emptied gradually. As shown in Fig. 2, the bottom flap b of the scoop is carried by yoke-pieces b<1>, the rear portions of which are formed as toothed sectors engaging gear-wheels d mounted on a shaft e carried by the scoop arm 2. The shaft e also carries a brake disk f, having a band brake g normally pulled by a weight m on a bell-crank lever connected by a link l with a lever g<2> to which the free end of the band is fixed. A cord o lift the weight and allows the flap to open when required, the rate of emptying of the scoop being determined by the pull given to the cord. To allow the flap to close by gravity on the downward movement of the scoop, the wheels d and the disk f are loose on the shaft e, and spring pawls p on the brake disk engage ratchet-wheels q secured to the gear-wheels d; the flap is thus always free to close, but is free to open only when the brake g is released. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the ratchet gear is omitted, and the gear-wheels d and the brake disk f are fixed to the shaft e. The weight m is lifted, and the brake released, by a rope o' wound on a roller r on which the operating-rope o is also wound. When the scoop has been emptied, a strong pull is given to the rope o, a tooth r' on the roller r is caught by a toothed lever s, and the brake is held released. When the flap b closes, a slotted rod t releases the roller r and allows the weight to fall and the brake to act.
