To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that we, EDWIN J. llituin, PAUL id. SrnvnNs, and WERNER Lin-limit, being citizens of the United States, and residents ot South Milwaukee, in the county of hililwuulree and the State of Wisconsin, (whose post-otlice address is care of Bucyrus Company, South Milwaukee, lVisconsim) have invented a certain new and useful llmprovement in Dipper llripping Mcchnnisnn of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in dipper tripping mechanism for steam shovels and the like and is pcrticulurl adapted for use in connection with the larger type of shovels where the weights carried are so great end the parts so cumbersome, that the more :1 ct of tripping the bottom of the bucket for discharging the load becomes so great a burden on the operator as to decrease ohe speed and accuracy of operation.

C is the trip line anchored at one end on the lever C passing over a pulley C on the boom A and extending thence down to the working platform A.
D is a turbine housing mounted on the platform A. It contains an impulse wheel D mounted on the sheft D D is a pulley on that shaft about which the cable C is wound. l) is a coil spring anchored at one end on a pin D on the outside 01" the housing D, engaging at the other end in the slotted end of the shaft D the parts being so arranged that the spring keeps the line C taut at all dumping positions of the bucket. D is a nozzle adapted to discharge steam, water or other motive fluids against the buckets on the wheel. This nozzle is supplied with the motive fluid through the pipe D and controlled by a valve D near the hand of the operator. This motive fluid may be supplied by the boiler or by any other suitable source. D is the exhaust pipe through which the spent motive fluid may pass.

I have shown a turbine motor arranged to -);ert tension on the tripping cord. Obviously other means may be provided for pulling on the cord without departing materially from the spirit of my invention. Many other changes might also be made in size, shape and arrangement of parts and it will be understood, therefore, that my drawings in a very real sense diagrammatic though they do illustrate'in suflicient detail an operative. device.
The use and operation of my invention are as iollows:
The steam shovel is manipulated for excav'ation in the usual way by a shovel man who sits or stands on the working platform where he can see and control everything.
\Vhen he wants to dump the bucket load, instead of pulling on the cord by hand according to the usual practice, he merely works the lever or throws the clutch or does whatever has to he done to start the tripping engine which in this case is a turbine. The tripping engine winds up on the rope, rotates the lever and dumps the load.
The weight and length of the trip line furnishes the necessary elasticity to cushion the shock of the starting of the tripping engine and the spring or weight or other means which keeps the tripping rope relatively tight at all times makes sure that response to the tripping engine will be immediate.
The engine which I prefer to use is a turbine because as soon as the tripping action is complete and the steam turned 01f, the rope can be pulled out to conform to the bucket movements without material resistance on the part of the engine. But this engine might be of other types or there might be a ratchet action so that any form of engine or motive means is appropriate.
I claim:
A dipper latch tripper device comprising a rotary impulse wheel connected to a Winding drum, a cable wound about said drum, tension means acting through said drum to keep the cable taut, but not tight enough to trip the dipper latch, said tension means comprising a torque spring concentric with said rotary impulse wheel, a fluid pressure means acting against said rotary impulse wheel at the will of the operator whereby tension of the cable may be increased sufficiently to trip the dipper latch.
