Be it known thatV I, GEORGE EDMUND TUR- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion'and State .of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Dredges or Shovels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptiouof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tov make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in steam dredges or shovels; and the object is to simplify the construction and increase the speed, capacity, and general efficiency of the device and at the same time provide a machine that canloe properlyand effectively controlled by a single hand, and thus dispense with the services of the other help usually employedon these machines. V- v To these ends the invention consists inthe construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. Y
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form lnow known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skilll of a good mechanic without departing from the Spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved steam shovel or dredge. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section,.of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged schematic horizontal section of a portionot` the operating mechanism.

1 denotes the base-frame or platform, which in the present instance is a platforms car mounted on suitable wheels traveling on a track; but it may be the deck of a dredge or suitable barge when the shovel is used for submarine work.
2 represents the turn table horizontally journaled to the forward end of the platform, and 3 denotes the shoe orbracket in whichthe lower end of the crane 4 is fixed.
5 denotes the boom, which extends between the parallel arms of the crane and rests against a frictioneroller G, j ournaled in the crane, and 7- denotes the bucket fixed to the outer end of the boom, and 8 represents its hinged door or bottom, provided with a spring-actuated latch 9, ythe rear end of which is pivoted to a lever 10, fulcrumed to the boom 5, and the outer end of this lever 10 is connected to a rope 11, which passes over suitable guidepulleys, and its free end is attached to the .trip-weight 12.
13 represents the` main driving-shaft, provided at one end with the balance-wheel 14 and at the otherwith the driving-pinion 15. The engine and boiler are not shown; but the engine-governor 16 is shown, which also forms the throttle-valve for the engine.
17 denotes the main hoisting shaft, on which the hoisting-drum 18 is loosely journaled.
19 denotes an eccentric fixed on one end of the shaft 17, and itis provided With the usual eccentric strap and rod 20, which operates the boiler-feed pump 2l.
22 denotes a sprocket-wheel loosely journaled on said shaft 17, and its inner face is formed witha clutch 23, which is adapted to engage a corresponding clutch-collar 24, sliding on a key on the shaft.
25 represents a sprocket-wheel iixed on the car- axle 26, and 27 denotes a sprocket-chain connecting the sprocket-wheels 22 25, and by means of which the car may be propelled forward or backward, as desired.
28 denotes a collar loosely encompassing the shaft 17, contiguous to one end of the vdrum 18, and it is operated by the forked end of a lever29, the free end of which is connected by a rod 30 to a bell-crank lever 31, and from this'latter a rod 32 extends to the lower end of the hand-lever 33. the drum 1S is formed with an integral concentric flange 34, the outer cylindrical face of which is encompassed by a band-brake 35, controlled by a bell-crank lever 36, operated bya rod 37, 'connected to a bell-'crank lever 38, from which a rod 39 extends tothe pistonrod of a steam-cylinder 40,'and the slide-valve 41 of this cylinder is provided with a valvestem 42, extendingl to a bell-'crank lever 43,
The opposite end of IOO v the opposite end or arm of which is connected to the rod 30, which, as above described, is operated by the hand-lever 33.
The inner face of the drum-flange 34 is formed with a female friction-cone 44, which encompasses a reverselyformed male cone 45, formed integral with the spur gear-wheel 46, fixed to the shaft 17 and in mesh with the pinion 15 on the engine-shaft 1 3, and when the collar 2S is employed to crowd the drum against the gear 4G the drum rotates with the gear, and when the collar is withdrawn the drum is released, and in the act of releasing the collar by means of the rod 30 the position of the valve 4l on the steam-cylinder 40 is reversed to actuate the rod 39 and apply the hand-brake 35 to hold the drum stationary, so that the brake is automatically applied in the action of releasing the drum from its driving-shaft, there heilig of course sufficientlostmotion between the cone-clutch on the drum and the brake so that the brake may be released while the clutch is out of gear.
From the drum 1S a chain or wire rope extends over suitable guide-pulleys, as shown, and over a guide-pulley 4S on the end of the boom 4, thence down around a pulley on the bucket-bail 50, and upward over a pulley 51 on the boom and down again, where its end is fixed to the shackle 52 on the bail 50.
53 represents a counter-shaft having a spur gear-wheel 54, fixed thereto and in mesh with the corresponding gear 46 on the shaft 17.
55 and 5G denote cone friction-hubs fixed on said shaft 53, and 57 and 58 denote winding-drums loosely journaled on said shaft, and their contiguous ends are formed with cone friction-flanges 59 60, which encompass the hubs 55 and 5G, respectively.
61 and 62 represent collars loosely mounted on the shaft 53, contiguous to the outer ends of the drums 57 58, -and they are adapted to move said drums endwise, so as to engage the friction-clutches 55 59 and 56 G0, respectively. The collar Gl is moved laterally to and from its drum 57 by means of the lever G3, the opposite end of which is connected to the bellcrank lever G4, which in turn is provided with a rod G5, extending toasimilar bell-crank lever 66, from which a rod G7 extends to a handlever GS, while a collar 62 is similarly moved by a lever 69, connected to a bell-crank lever 70, the opposite arm of which is pivoted to the rod G5, the connections being such that when the hand-lever GS is thrown in one direction the drum 57 will revolve with the shaft 53, while the drum 5S is free, and, vice versa, when the hand-lever 68 is thrown in the opposite'direction the drum 5S will be fast and the drum 57 loose. A chain 7l has one end wound around and made fast to the drum 57, and after being carried around the turn-table 2 its opposite end is wound in the opposite direction and lnade fast to the drum 58, so that by the movement of the hand-lever GS the crane 4 may be swung around tothe right or left, as desired.
72 denotes a duplex friction-cone fixed on the shaft 5.), and 73 74 represent windingdrums loosely journaled on said shaft on opposite sides of the cone 72, and their contiguous ends are formed with female eone-ianges, which are adapted to encompass the contiguous faces of the duplex cone 72.
75 76 represent collars loosely mounted o the shaft 53 adjacent to the outer ends of the drums 73 74, respectively, and they are adapted to be moved laterally on said shaft, so as to crowd either of the drums 73 or 74 against the cone 72, the collar 75 being moved to and from its drum by means of the levell 77, the outer end of which is pivoted to one arm of the bell-crank lever 7S, which in turn is connectcd to the arm 79 of the bell-crank lever S0, and from the same arm a rod S1. extends to a bell-crank lever S2, the opposite arm of which is pivoted to a similar bell-crank lever S3, and from the opposite arm of the said lever a rod 84 extends to another l ellcrank lever 85, which in turn is connected to the handlever 33 by means of the rods SG S7 and bellcrauk lever S8, so that a lateral movementin one direction of the lever 33 will lock the drum 73 to its shaft and simultaneously release the drum 74, and, vice versa, a lateral movement 4in the opposite direction of the lever 33 will release the drum 73 and lock the drum 74 to its shaft. Of course it will be understood by reference to Fig. 5 that this lateral movement of the lever 33 in no wise affects the movement of the rod 32, the lever being fulcrumed on a ball-and-socket joint in the standard, although should occasion require to increase the speed, and consequently the capacity of the machine, the two movements may be effected simultaneously by a diagonal movement of the hand-lever.

S9 denotes a chain which is wound over and IIO wound under and its end fixed to the drum 74, and its opposite end, after passing over suitable guide-pulleys, as shown, and over the grooved pulley 92 on the crane, is made fast to the lowerend of the boom 5, and by means of these chains S9 91 and the drums 73 74 the boom is manipulated as desired.
93 denotes a brake band which encompasses the contiguous flanged ends of the drums 73 7 4, and it is controlled by the steamcylinder 94, the piston-rod 95 of which is connected by a bell-crank lever 96 to a rod 97, which in turn is connected to the bell-crank lever 98, the opposite arm of which is pivoted to the brake-band 93.
99 represents the valve-stem of the cylinder 94, and its opposite end is pivoted to the common bolt 1.00, connecting the contiguous arms of the bell-crank levers 82 S3, the operation being such that when either of the drums 73 74 are revolving the brake-band is so adjusted as to bear on the anges of the drums 7 3 74 with just sufficient friction to prevent the drums racing or the chains overrunning the chains on the drums.
101 represents a-bell-erank lever, one end of which is connected to the governor-valve 16, (which, as hereinbefore stated, is also the throttle-valve,) and from the opposite arm of said lever a rod 102 is operatively connected to a pedal 103, arranged convenient to the hand-levers 33 G8, so that at the proper time the engine may be speeded to facilitate the Work, thus placing the entire control of the machine to the best possible advantage of the single attendant.
Thehinged door 8 on the bucket 7 is automatically opened and closed in the ordinary operation of the boom 5 without any attention whatever on the part of the attendant and is accomplished in the following manner: Assuming that the bucket has discharged its contents and the door is hanging open, the bucket is now given a rearward movement, which causes the door to fly to and the springactuated latch to engage its keeper and lock the bucket-door. The length of the latchrope 11 is such that it is always slack while the bucket is being lowered yand raised, and at all times, in fact, except when the loaded bucket is in an approximately vertical position and the boom 5 has been run outward to suspend the bucket over the dump, 'and the latch-rope is of such a length that the slack ving the latch and releasing the bucket-door,
so as to permit the contents of the bucket to be discharged on the'dnmp.v
Having thus fully describe-d my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination in a dredge, of the shaft 17, the drum 18, the brake-band 35 encompassing said drum, the steam-cylinder 40, having its piston-rod operatively connected to said brake-band 35', and means for simultaneously operating said piston-rod and connecting or disconnecting said drum and the power-shaft, as and for the p urpose set forth.
2. The combination in a dredge of the shaft '17, the drum 18 mounted on said shaft, the
shaft 53, the drums 73, 74 mounted on the shaft 53, and the hand-lever 33, operatively connected to said drums, 1S and 73, 74, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination in a dredge, of the bucket-7 ,the door 8 hinged thereto,the springactuated latch 9, the lever 10 pivoted to said latch, the flexible rope 11 connected at one end to said lever,t'he weight 12 ixed to the other end of said rope, and a shelf-support arranged in the path of said Weight, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.
