Abstract

1621. Bates, A., Marsh, J. J., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. Jan. 22. Moulding-machines with fixed moulds; processes. -A mould in which heel lifts, shoe-bottom fillers, &c. are made has a false bottom E<6>, which may be situated at varying depths in the mould. In making a bottom filler, the bottom E<6> is brought close to the upper edge of the mould, which is then filled with scrap leather and cementitious material. A plunger is depressed upon the material by means of a hand-wheel B' until the bottom, which is supported by a rod E<9> gripped in an adjustable friction clamp F<3>, is pressed downwards a short distance. The plunger is lifted, more material placed in the mould, the plunger again depressed, and the process is repeated until the mould is sufficiently filled. Screws are then passed through the sides of the mould to engage the sloping top of the plunger, and thus the material is retained under pressure. The mould is then removed by detaching the plunger from the spindle, swinging forward the mould on a pivoted support E, and lifting it off the rod E9. When the material has set, the plunger is taken off the mould which is then inverted and placed in a frame L, whereupon the material is forced out by depressing the bottom by a rod A'.
