Abstract
866. Lange, H. S. Jan. 13. Actuating valves ; lift valves ; handles ; seats.-In order to facilitate the inspection and repair of the valves of a hydrant, stand-pipe, or the like, an auxiliary valve 2, Fig. 3, is fitted beneath each main valve 1 so as to shut off the fluid supply when the main valves are removed. The auxiliary valves are held open, when the valves 1 are open, by projections 9, 10 formed upon the valves. The valves 1 are operated by spindles having differential screw-threads 23, 24 working in screw-threaded holes formed in the guides 27 and in the valves respectively, so that a fine adjustment of the valve is possible without employing fine screw-threads. The conical seats 18 of the valves 1 are formed in a plate 32, Fig. 7, screwed on to the foot of the pipe 35 which is normally pressed downwards by bolts 39 carried by the outer casing of the hydrant so as to effect water-tight junctions between the parts. When repairs have to be effected, the valves 1 and seats 18 are removed bodily together with the pipe 35. The valve seats 8 of the auxiliary valves 2 are formed with slots 45, Fig. 8, by means of which they can be removed by the aid of the tool shown. In order to allow the water above the valve 1 to flow away when desired, a port 16, Fig. 3, is provided in the stem 28 of the valve, by means of which water entering through the holes 15 is able to escape through the port 17 into the space outside the hydrant. Fig. 11 shows an operating-handle carrying a spur-wheel 53 at one end, by means of which both valves may be operated simultaneously as shown, and having a squared hole 54 at the other for operating the valves singly.
