Abstract

27,341. Lesm³ller, A. Dec. 16. Lighting lamps; light, obtaining by friction of metallic particles.-A pyropborous composition which gives off sparks, when scratched, capable of igniting inflammable substances, and which when mixed with oxidizing-salts and used in a pulverized state is suitable for the preparation of flash-lights and the like, consists of metals of the rare earths admixed with silicon, titanium, or boron. The rare-earth metals are obtained by electrolysis, and the silicon, titanium, or boron may be mixed therewith in the same chamber ; or the rare-earth metals may be melted in a crucible before the admixture is made, air being excluded by a cover of a molten salt such as of sodium, barium, or potassium chloride, or the metals may be melted in a jet of indifferent gases or in a vacuum in order that the admixture may be made.
