Abstract
2876. Beck, H. Feb. 5, 1909, [Convention date]. Light, obtaining by friction of metallic and other particles.-Pyrophoric alloys which ignite spontaneously on exposure to the air consist of 60-20 per cent of mercury together with 40-80 per cent of cerium or other rare-earth metal or metals. The rare-earth metal, in finely-divided form, is heated to 500-600‹ C. in mercury vapour to obtain the alloy. The alloys in burning produce intense spark and flame formations, and may be used for kindling combustible gases and other inflammable materials. Cerium-mercury alloys containing 10-16 per cent of cerium are also referred to.
