Abstract

25,705. Jamieson, R. T. C. S. Nov. 28. Elastic-fluid turbines.-Relates to turbines of the oppositely-running rotor type, and consists in combining parallel and radial-flow sections working in series, and in providing means for reversing. Motive fluid is admitted by way of pipes D<1> to annular chambers D and thence through fixed guide passages E<1>, Figs. 3 and 6, to curved pockets B', C', in the oppositely-rotating rotors B, C, mounted upon hollow and solid shafts respectively. The motive fluid then passes in a radial direction and successively strikes against blades C<2>, B<2>, mounted upon the rotors C, B, respectively, and after striking fixed blades A<1> to increase the reactive effect, it exhausts into a central annular chamber G connected to the exhaust pipe G'. In reversing- turbines the parallel-flow section is formed with double-concave blades B<1>, C', Fig. 9, adapted to act equally well for either direction of rotation ; an oscillating disk valve H is provided whereby the oppositely-directed guide-passages E<2>, E<3> may be alternatively rendered operative. The radial blades are also made double-convex but are provided with cores L, M, Fig. 10, made integral with continuous side rings, and capable of free oscillation within the limits shown, whereby they assume automatically a lagging position according to the direction of rotation, and so produce radial ways conforming to the requirements of the direction of rotation. The fixed reaction blades in this case are made doubleconvex as shown at A', Fig. 10.
