Elastic - fluid turbines. -Relates to the balancing of end - thrust in marine installations in w h i c h fore or cruising turbines can be coupled by a sliding coupling f to the main turbine. The steam-thrust of the main turbine b is balanced by the oppositely - acting propeller thrust, and the axial thrust introduced when the cruising turbine c is running is taken up by devices arranged in the main turbine. The devices may consist, as shown in the Figure, of dummy pistons h, i, the chambers k, l being supplied with high-pressure steam from the inlet q ot the cruising turbine, or from another source. When the turbine c is idle, this supply of steam is cut off, and the chambers k, l are connected by a valve o. The valve o may be combined with a reducing - valve, and the adjustment may be effected by a thrust-meter in the shafting. In a modification, a balancing- shoulder is provided on the drum of the main turbine at the inlet end, of such dimensions that the steam thrust is greater than the opposing propeller thrust when the cruising turbine is idle, and is less when this turbine is running. The unbalanced thrust is taken up by a thrust bearing g.
