18,439. Toman, K. Sept. 2. Moulding tiles &c.-An extrusion die is formed so as to produce a series of titles in the form of a hollow block, the tiles being scored at their connexion with each other so that they may be easily separated after burning. The die-plate 1 is fitted with bridge-pieces 2 carrying blocks 5 between which are arranged plates 8 so that pairs of tiles are produced as shown in section in Fig. 3, these being connected to other tiles at their edges. Fillets 7 are attached to the die-plate 1 and blocks 5 to produce interlocking edges, and plates 14 are attached to the plates 8 to produce a central aperture in the tiles. A mould-plate 17, fitting into a recess in the die-plate 1, is formed with recesses 6 for forming the nibs of the tiles, and channels 16 for the escape of air. In use, the mould-plate 17 is pressed up against the die 1, and clay is forced in to form the tile nibs ; the mould plate is then lowered and a pallet inserted, after which the tiles are extruded until of the desired length, when they are cut off by a frame moving in guides 19. Modified forms of die-plate, for the production of plain or curved tiles, are described.
