Abstract

17,543. Stayte, A. H. Aug. 21. Gas and like engines, governing. In motor -vehicles driven by an internal - combustion engine, the motive power is cut off automatically when a certain speed is reached, by means of excess of pressure in a liquid circuit kept in circulation by a pump driven by the engine and containing adjustable resistances. In the arrangement shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the pump A, driven by the shaft A', draws liquid from the tank D through a non-return valve and discharges it into the pipe B, from which it returns to the tank after passing through the resistances E, F, the course being indicated by the arrows C, C' ... C'‹. The resistance E is so adjusted that on the attainment of a certain speed the pressure of the liquid closes the throttle-valve or the like. When the pump is reversed, the non-return valves are so arranged that the pump draws liquid from the tank D through the pipe I, while the liquid leaves the pump at the other side and passes through the same course as before Figs. 2 and 3 show the construction of the adjustable resistance and throttle-valve operating arrangement. An adjustable opening for the passage of liquid is obtained by means of a valve K having a crescent-shaped opening M, Fig. 5, and adapted to be set for a particular speed limit by the pointer L<2> and clamping screws. Rise of pressure of the liquid due to increased speed of circulation forces the piston 0 against the spring 0<1> and tends to close the throttle-valve Q, which may however contain a V-shaped slot to avoid complete stoppage of the engine.
