Abstract

1,097,328. Circumferential-flow fans. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct.24, 1966 [Dec. 20, 1965], No.47571/66. Headings F1B and F1C. Air is fed to the exhaust manifolds through pipes 26, 28, in amounts which decrease as engine speed increases. The air is delivered by an impeller type pump 30 and is controlled by a spool type valve 34 actuated by a fluid type governor 16 driven at engine speed from the transmission 12. At low speeds the valve permits the air entering at 32 to flow through an opening 102 in the valve land 92 to pipe 36 leading to the exhaust manifold. At a predetermined speed the fluid pressure in pipe 18 acts upon land 94 to move valve spool 96 to the left to close passage 36 and divert the air flow to passage 38 leading to atmosphere or to the air pump inlet. The pump comprises a rotor 54 mounted on bearings 50, 53, and sealed to the stator 56 by sealing rings 70, 72, the air entering at 58 and leaving at 60.
