Description

PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905.
} E. SHUKER. HYDRAULIC GOVERNOR FOR ENGINES OR MOTORS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 24, 1905.
WI TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN SHUKER, OF ROTHERHAM, ENGLAND.
HYDRAULIC GOVERNOR FOR ENGINES OR MOTORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed Iuly 24, 1905. Serial No. 270,968-
provements in Hydraulic Governors for Engines or Motors, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hydraulic governors for engines or motors; and the object thereof is to provide an improved apparatus of this class whereby the speed of engines or motors is controlled by the use of water or other fluid as a medium.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters, said drawing being a partial sectional side elevation of my improved governing apparatus.
In the practice of my invention I employ a double-acting pump a, the rod b of which I connect with the valve-rod or to any convenient reciprocating part of the engine or motor, said engine or motor being not shown, and the outlet or delivery valves .0 and c from the pump are connected by a branch d with a chamber or barrel 6, in which a ram f is fitted. 'The movement of this ram operates the throttle-valve 'of the engine by means of a forked lever g or other suitable device. A branch h from this ram-barrel acts as a bypass, in which is fitted a regulator-valve 71, by the adjustment of which the movements of the ram and the speed of the engine are regulated; A relief or safety valve is also fixed on this bypass branch h or on another branch h, conveniently placed in the rambarrel, so that in the event of the pump forcing the ram to its maximum height, which may be regulated by stops, this valve will allow the water to escape.
In order that the same water may be used over and over again, I place a tank is to receive the overflow from the regulating-valve and relief-valve and connect the said tank by a branch Z with the suction-chamber m and valves m and m of the ump.
The return action or the plunger is obtained by the use of a dead-weight n or a spring. g a
In some cases'I provide a water-gage 0, so
that the level of the water in the tank may be readily seen and any waste made good, as required, and in some cases I also provide a back-pressure valve y) between the pump and the hydraulic ram which actuates the throttle-valve.
In the construction shown the barrel or chamber 6 consists of a vertically-arranged pipe, which passes through the tank 7c and in which the ram or plunger f is vertically mov' able, and it will be understood that the lever g is in practice connected with the throttlevalve of the engine or motor in the usual way, said engine or motor being not shown, and the suction-valves m and m control corresponding ports or passages m and m*, which form a communication between the suction-chamber m and the bottom chamber m in the usual manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for governing the speed of engines or motors by the use of water or other fluid as a medium, a hydraulic ram adapted to be connected with the throttlevalve of the engine or motor, and a doubleacting pump also adapted to be connected with the engine or motor, the ram-cylinder being provided with a by-pass, and a tank with which said by-pass communicates, said by-pass being also provided with a regulating-valve, and another by-pass communicating with said ram-cylinder and with said tank and provided with a safety-valve, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus for governing the speed of engines or motors by the use of water or other fluid as a medium, a hydraulic ram adapted. to be connected with the throttlevalve of the engine or motor, and a doubleacting pump also adapted to be connected with the engine or motor, the ram-cylinder being provided with a by-pass, and a tank with which said by-pass communicates, said by-pass being also provided with a regulating-valve, and another by-pass communicating' with said ram-cylinder and with said tank and provided with a safety-valve, said tank being also in communication with the suction-chamber of the pump, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a vertically-arranged ram-cylinder, a doubleacting pump in communication with the botlever in one direction, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres- I 5 ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 10th day of July, 1905.
EDWIN SI-IUKER.
