Abstract

16,998. Bode, A. Aug. 12. Loading and unloading ; cranes.-In a floating crane, the greater part of the framework, together with the elevating-mechanism and the counterweight, are arranged below the level of the deck of the containing hull in such a manner that horizontal forces are not transmitted to the sides and deck of the ship ; also a number of small ships may be carried in the crane ship for transportation. The crane may be constructed as a stationary crane, or as a turning crane. In the latter case the column carrying the jib may turn in a rigid external supporting-frame, or, as shown in Fig. 2, the cross frame b supporting the jib c may surround and rotate upon a column f rigidly secured within the ship. The entire winding-mechanism d and the counterweight are located close to the ship's bottom to secure stability.
