Abstract

16,852. Hall, R. F. Aug. 11. Gas and like engines, igniting in. In a sparking-plug of the type in which the insulation of the central conductor is made up of disks or washers of mica, the insulation c so formed has its lower end c<1> rounded and is tapered to fit an externally screwed steel sleeve e, the lower edge of which is turned over the rounded portion c' of the insulation c. The sleeve e is forced on. The body b of the plug has a shoulder b' which forms a support for an extension piece f of steatite or like material, an asbestos or other elastic packing-ring g being interposed. The object of the piece f, the enlarged part f<2> of which is rounded at f<1>, is to prevent sparks passing between the central steel conductor a and the metallic body of the plug. Sparking normally occurs between the preferably detachable points a<3> and the lower edge b<1> of the plug body. The rounded edges c<1> f<1> provide sufficient clearance to permit of expansion and contraction. The edge b<5> of the body may be turned or spun over an external shoulder e<2> on the sleeve e.
