Abstract

9020. Watt, F. J. April 25. Gas and like engines, igniting in. In a sparking- plug, the insulation is prevented from cracking (1) by allowing it to expand, (2) by preventing it from coming into direct contact with the outer shell, and (3) by completely enclosing it in the casing. The body 1 receives a screwed gland 7, in a recess of which is a resilient packing-ring 15 against which the enlarged part 13 of the insulation is pressed. The insulator is held in place by the central conductor 16 by means of nuts 25, 27 and concave resilient washers 24, 28. The lower end of the conductor is enlarged, and bears against resilient packing kept in place by a shoulder in the bore of the insulator. The upper part of the insulator is surrounded by the cap 3 bearing on the washer 26. Sparking occurs between a platinum or other point 17 and a wire 31. The above construction prevents leakage of gas. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the conductor is of the same diameter throughout, but has annular grooves 32 which retain in place a resilient packing 33, which is moulded or otherwise applied.
