Field carriages of the type in which an upper carriage supporting the gun and cradle is capable of being traversed relatively to a lower carriage, are provided with " seizing gear," which serves to prevent strains coming on the elevating and traversing gears when the gun is transported, Fig. 1 is a side view of the gun and mounting and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the seizing gear. The guncradle B is supported by trunnions b<1> in the upper carriage C which rests in a bearing c<1> in the lower carriage D. The shaft F F<1> is supported in the upper carriage U, and has right and left handed screwed portions f<3>, f<4> engaging with threads on each of two claws E, which slide on a cross-beam c' and engage with ribs b' on the cradle B. When the gun is in the " seizing position," a handle f is turned ; the shaft F F<1> is thereby revolved and the claws E approach and bind the cradle to the cross-beam c<2>. At the same time pinions f<5> are revolved and engage with racks on blocks G, which are thereby inserted into recesses in the undercarriage D. Specification No. 10,015, A.D. 1905, is referred to.
