Description

J. F. MEIGS & S. A. S. 'HAMMAR. TRAINING AND ELEVATING MECHANISM FOR GUNS.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9, 1 906.
Patented. July 19, 1910.
1H: NORRIS PETERS 00., WA
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. MEIGS AND SIGAED A. S. HAMMAR, OF SOUTH BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNORS TO BETHLEHEM STEEL COMPANY, OF SOUTH BETHLEHEM, PENNSYL- VANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TRAINING AND ELEVATING MECHANISM FOR GUNS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN F. MEIGS and SIGARD A. S. HAMMAR, a citizen of the United States and a subject of the King of Sweden, respectively, residing at South Bethlehem, Northampton county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Training and Elevating Mechanism for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the training and elevating mechanism of guns and more particularly in the combination with such mechanism of a shoulder rest adapted to prevent movement of the body of the gunner while operating the mechanism.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a gun embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the shoulder rest and adjacent parts.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the gun, 2 the sleeve, 3 the trunnions, 4: the carriage and 5 one of the sights. The present invention is especially applicable to training and elevating mechanism of the type patented to us in Letters Patent No. 785,966, dated March 28, 1905, in which two cranks or handles are operated simultaneously in opposite directions by a single operator. The object of the two cranks is to prevent the swaying of the body of the gunner so that he may keep his eye steady at the sight while moving the gun. In order to still further prevent any movement of the body of the gunner, we provide, according to the present invention, a double shoulder brace, that is, a brace for each shoulder.
We have shown in the drawing a seat 6 for the gunner and above and forward of the seat two hand wheels 7 8, having their Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 9, 1906.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Serial No. 295,324.
respective handles 7 8 oppositely disposed, as illustrated and described in Patent 7 85,966. Forward of the seat are two shoulder rests 9 which, as shown, are adjustably supported upon a common pedestal 10 which is mounted on the carriage and movable with it. By means of the double shoulder rest the gunner is able to keep his eye accurately on the sight while moving the gun either with the training or the elevating mechanism.
Gearing suitable for operating the gun by means of the handles 7*, 8 is shown in our Patent 785,966, and it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the same in detail herein.
While we have illustrated and described the double shoulder rest as used in connection with two hand wheels or cranks, it will be evident that it is also useful in combination with the sighting device alone or with the sighting devlce and a single hand wheel or crank for training or elevating. We do not therefore, limit ourselves to the particular construction illustrated and described.
Having described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The combination with a gun and its sighting device, of means for moving the gun comprising suitable gearing, two handles for operating the gearing arranged to move in opposite directions simultaneously with respect to the operator, and a double shoulder rest whereby-both shoulders of the gunner may be supported.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. MEIGS. SIGARD A. S. HAMMAR.
\Vitnesses JOHN ROSEWARNE, J r., LEIGHTON N. D. MIXSELL.
