REVOLVING BATTERY.
' SPECIFGATI'ON forming part of Letters Patent N o. 665,816, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed August l, 1900. Serial No. 25,482. (No model.) I
To all 107110111, 7113 may concern: p
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at National Home, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Revolving Battery, of which the following is a specification.
My. invention relates to improvements in means for mounting battery-guns; and the. objects ot' my improvements are, iirst, to pro- 'vide for the automatic lowering of the guns from their tiring position toa protected position in which they may be loaded; second,
to afford means whereby the lowering of one gun automatically brings a loaded gun into firing position, and, third, to provide for the ready and necessary adjustment of the guns both in elevation for range and in traverse.
l attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-A Figure 1 isa side elevation of a battery embodying my invention.; and Fig. 2 is a hori- Zontal section of the same, taken on lines s z of Fig. 1.
The base-plate contains the usual antifrictionrollers and the usual pivot, by virtue oi which the mount maybe revolvedin order to direct the guns at various point-s of the com-- pass. These rollers and the pivot are shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Connected to the baseplate E by the said pivot is the turntable of the mounting` E'. This table carries two standards D D',and in bearings `provided at the tops of these standards, which bearings are in alinement with each other, are mounted the gunearrying wheels A A', the axes B B of these wheels being mounted eccentrically in the bushings R R, which fit the aforesaid alined bearings. The axes B B' are oppositely disposed inthe bushings R R relatively to the central line of the bearings. The bushings are connected together by a lever Q. 'lhe guns are mounted in the wheels A A by means of trunnions o c', these trun-4 nions being offset along the length oi' the gun by an amount equal to the distance. between the axes' lV 3. lt will thus be seen that as the lever Qis elevated or depressed thebushings R R' will be revolved together an equal amount, and thereby the axis B ol' wheel A will be elevated above the center the 4same amount as the axis" B and its wheel A' are depressed below the center, .l Asahesewheel's Ieachcarry a set a trunnions of the guns, the
trunnionson one side will all be elevated,
while those on the other are all depressed,
, and as these trunnions are oiset in the length of the guns the guns-will vbe elevated or depressed, according to the movementgiven to the lever Q. ln my drawings the lever Q is merely a conventional representation of the means employed for revolving the bushings R R. `It will be understood that any wellknown means can be employed foi-operating this lever without departing from my invention.
`Any convenient number of guns may be employed in this battery, provided only there is a plurality of guns two or more. y
In the operation orthe battery the gu'n which lls at the top ot' the wheels is in firing position above the fortification. gun is fired by any'well-known means, its recoil will bring it to a position below and protected by the fortification, where it may be loaded with safety to the men employed,
when this and at the same time another gun will oe V elevated to the firing position.
tain the same elevation determined bythe position of the lever Q, and it'will also be ob-l It will be 0bvious that all the guns will constant-ly main' the center of either wheeland simultaneously lowering the other an equal amount, whereby all the guns are equally elevated or depressed,
substantially as described.
2. In a revolving battery, a horizon tal turn table, a pair of bushings journaled in alinement iu the tops of the standards and connected together by a forked lever, a pair of vertical wheels each Ajournaled in one of said TOO lggshings with ari equa and opposite oset In testimony whereof have signed my v from the center thereo, and ya plurality ofname to thls specleaaxon mv the presence 0f guns each having its brunnions offset along .two subscribing witnesses.
its axis by an amount equal to the oset of SAMUEL WALKER; 5 the"Whee1-centers from eachother, sfmdhfnrrv Witnesseg,
nious being joui'naled in theircorrespondng M. O. l},EGAI-T,
Wheels, substantially as desmbed. Y M. J. REGAN.
