Abstract
12,708. Alley, S. E. June 13. Sliding valves.-In a gate or sluice valve having two oppositely-disposed disks, two pairs of 'wedge surfaces G, L, Fig. 1, are formed upon the operating-block C to engage counterpart wedges D, D<1>, E, El, on the disks, the wedges being acute in the direction of closing and obtuse in 'the direction of opening. The disks are thereby wedged outwards with great force when, in closing, they are arrested by the stops J, K, and are held gently upon their seats during opening. In order to prevent the premature action of the acute wedging-arrangement by any small resistance offered to the disks, a spring S is arranged between the block C and projections formed on the valve disks to ensure the disks arriving on the stops J, K before the wedge surfaces G, D, E come into operation. In Fig. 1, these projections are shown formed with obtuse wedge-surfaces M, N, engaged by a wedgeblock P on which the spring presses.
