8084. Hague, A. V. April 5. Actuating valves; lift valves.-The valve faces E, F of a sluice valve are withdrawn from and pressed against their seats D by short toggle-levers G, each connected at one end to the screwed operating-spindle I and guided at the other end by rollers L carried on a spindle K held by lugs on the back of the valve, engaging guiding-paths M formed by projecting walls on the casing. To keep the valve faces parallel to the seats, projections J are formed on the ends of the levers G. The operating- spindle may be packed by an ordinary stuffing- box and gland, or a piston moving in a cylinder may be employed. A modification is described in which one of the valve faces is dispensed with, the remaining face being held against its seat either by fluid pressure or by means of a bearing-surface provided for the purpose. According to the Provisional Specification, the levers G may be connected to a fitting having a ball-bearing connexion with the operating-spindle.
