Slipping of wheels, preventing.-In a non-skid device for self-propelled vehicles, metal rollers with tapered treads are carried by arms pivoted in brackets on the rear axle or other part of the vehicle, so that when side-slip occurs, one or other of the rollers is tilted against a stop and at the same time is pressed against the ground by a cam. Two brackets b, connected by a piece d or cast in one piece, are secured to the axle a and are provided with pins e from which depend arms g carrying rollers h. The arms g have cams g<1> which engage the undersides of the brackets b when the arms g are tilted so as to press the rollers h against the road, slots g<2> being formed in the arms to allow the necessary downward movement. The lower parts b<1> of the brackets b are tapered to form stops for the arms g, which are normally kept in the vertical position by the cams g<1> and a spring k or springs disposed between the brackets and the arms. The rollers h have narrow rubber or other tyres h<1> upon which they normally run and the tapered surfaces may be roughened. A modification is described in the Provisional Specification in which cylindrical rollers, cut across diagonally so as to present an elliptic face, are mounted on tilting axles together with narrow running wheels placed nearer the axle joints. When side-slip occurs, one of the rollers tilts and presents its elliptic face to the ground. The device is restored to normal position by springs connected to the axles and carrying-brackets.
