545. Ogilvie, G. S. Jan. 8. Slipping of wheels, preventing. - Relates to non-skid devices for road vehicles, of the kind in which a spring- pressed roller tilts automatically when side-slip occurs so as to grip the road, and consists in forming the hub of the roller with outwardlyflanged openings to allow it to tilt relatively to its axle. A roller a, having a central rubber tyre b held between two gripping- flanges a<1> by transverse bolts, is mounted on a spherical bearing e<1> on an axle e, which is free to slide vertically in brackets c fixed to the axle or other part of the vehicle. The axle e is kept pressed down by springs f, the compression of which may be varied by cotters g acting on the follower plates of the springs. The cotters may also be used for keeping the device out of operation, by placing them in slots g<1> after the axle e has been raised. The hub of the roller a is flared as shown at h to allow it to tilt, when side-slip occurs, against castors i carried by brackets j which slide with the axle e. Spring-mounted castors k, bearing against the rollers a to keep it normally in its vertical position, are also provided on the brackets j. Thrust collars e<2> are formed or secured on the axle e which may project through the brackets c to take nuts e<3> acting as additional thrust collars.
