Sleepers fomed of a single block of armoured concrete are reinforced by two metal plates only ; the lower one a' extends the whole length of the sleeper, while the upper one a, which has a V- shaped channel, reaches only to the ends of the reduced central part. The plates are perforated at d, Fig. 4, to enable the concrete to pass through and around them. The rails are seated on a steel plate f, Fig. 1, resting on a pad g of felt, rubber, &c., and are secured by a twin-bolt k, with its head e<1> against a sunk washer l.
