Abstract

11,978. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Park, W. June 2. Sanding rails.-A sanding-device for self-propelled vehicles is adapted to be operated when any slipping of the wheels on the running surface takes place. A hopper 1 is connected by means of flexible tubing 3 with a distributing-chamber 4 containing a wheel with chambers on its periphery. The shaft carrying this wheel has a sprocket-wheel keyed to it, rouud which a chain passes in tubes 5, 6. The chain also passes round a second sprocketwheel keyed on an inclined spindle 14 on which two wheels 12, 13 are loosely mounted. The wheels 12, 13 are adapted to engage with the vehicle wheel 8 and rail 15 respectively, when the spindle is drawn forward by suitable links against the action of the spring 16, the other end of which is secured to a bracket 17. Bevel-wheels are secured to the sides of the wheels 12, 13 and are engaged by a bevel-wheel carried by a member secured to the spindle 14 so that the whole forms a differential gear. When the wheels 12, 13 are drawn into contact with the wheel 8 and track 15, the spindle 14 is unaffected if the wheel is not slipping. When slipping occurs, the wheels 12, 13 revolve at unequal speeds and the spindle 14 is rotated. Through the sprocket-wheels the sandhox is operated. Provision may be made for bringing only one of the small wheels into contact with the driving-wheel or running surface when a continuous supply of sand is required. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the small wheels 12, 13 may be advanced into position by electric means.
