Rotary kilns.-In a gasfired rotary cement kiln, the clinker zone h is contracted at its rear end i so that gas from the pipe g, on impinging upon the contracted part, may cause eddies and produce a high temperature. The front surface of the contracted part may be conical and slope towards the charging end of the kiln as shown in Fig. 1, or it may slope towards the discharging end as shown in Fig. 2. The rear surface of the contracted part may slope steeply, or a long incline may be formed so that the material passes into the clinker zone without falling into a dead space.
