' routiri iasnn, O 'O N AGEN DENMARK. giro class c? acon/arm s oolvlsusrlou.
Be it known that I, Pour. LARsnN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing in the city of Copenhagen, in-the Kingdom of Denmark, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Processes 'of Regulating Comustion, ofwhich the followin is a specification, reference being had to t e accompany-- midrawing, forming apart hereof.
order to regulate the combustion in a furnace it is customa to provide means for varying the amount fuel or air or fuel mixture introduced therein, whereby the work 'done by the furnace at any given moment depends u on the amount of fuel in combustion at t at moment. I have discovered that in many furnaces the combustion may ing t e point-or points of introduction into the furnace of the fuel, air, or both, or they fuel mixture, as the case may be. Particularlyis this the case in a rotary furnace, such as is commonly employed in the manufacture of cement. Such a furnace generall has'a long cylindrical rotating member slig tly inclined, in which the raw material 1s.introduced at its higher end and flows down through the cylinder to the lower end, from which it is dischar ed, and through which end the fuel is introduced. In such furnaces if the clinkering of the cement is not being properly effected I have discovered that by moving the point of introduction ofthe fuel or fuel mixture farther into the cylinder the same effect is produced as if the uantity of fuel or fuel mixture were increase l versa.- I have also discovered that the introduction of the fuel and air separately into the cylindrical combustion-chamber and the varying of the points of introduction of the air and fuel independently of each other roduces a corresponding re ulating e ect. Moreover, there are other a vantages in introducing the air and fuel separately into the combustion-chamber-in that it permits the quantity of-fuel mixture to be regulated with eat accuracy and in that the air may be eated to any degree of temperature Without danger of explosions, as occur when the air and fuel are heated together or when the fuel is introduced through the same conduit with the highly-heated air.
In the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a portion of a furnace in which Specification of Letters meat.

' the invention may be practiced, although, as
ecarried out 1n other the tubes or and vice aid drawing represents in central section the lower end of a rota furnace, showing pipes for t e introduction of fuel and air. V v The combustion-chamber a of saidfurmice is cylindrical in construction and may be of any Suitable length. Only the lower end of this chamber islshown; but, it will be understood that the up er end is adapted to receive the raw materia which, as the cylinder rotates, gravitates toward the lower end of the chamber, where it is discharged through an opening I) in a hood 0, which caps said lower end. Suitable means, which 1t 1s unnecessary to illustrate, are provided to Patented'J'uIy 3, 1906.
'efiect the rotation of the cylindrical chamber a, and the hood 0 is rigidlysecured to the foundation or supports for thefurnace, 1n the resent case to trucks (1. Throughthe hood 0, preferably at its central ortion, the means for su plying the fuel'or el mixture is introduced and extends 'into' the combustion-chamber a, In the present instance the fuel and air are introduced separately, the air entering through a pipe or conduit 0 and the fuel through a pipe'or conduit f, which is preferably tivel or in any other suitable manner, and
for t e corresponding movement of the nozzle h a rod m and a handle n may be provided. I j
In accordance with theinvention the air is heated to the desired temperature and introduced through the pi e e into the furnace, While the fuel, if solid? is pulverized. and introduced into the ace separately through the pipe f. When the air and fuel are discharged, they form a jet, the shape of which depends upon the relative positions of the two nozzles g and h. The hot blast produced by the burning jet impinges upon the material in the furnace which is traveling to- Ward the 'et and, in the case of cement, effects the'clinkerin of the same.
Itwill be clear t at by moving the nozzles farther into the furnace, so that the combustion will occur farther up in the cylindrical chamber a, the clinkering process, in the case of cement, will begin nearer the entrance of the raw material. If, therefore, it is discovered that the cement is not being delivered from the lower end of the combustion-chamber properly clinkered, the nozzles may be so adjusted that the clinkering shall begin at the pro er point in the chamber, whereby when t e cement is eventuall delivered therefrom it will be properly clin ered. It will be understood that various changes may be made in the apparatus illustrated herein for carrying out the invention Without is not limited to rota reference has been ma e s 'ecifically hereindeparting from the spirit of the invention. It 20 wi 1 be further understood that this invention furnaces, to which before, but may be used in rnaces generally.
I claim as my inventionv The process of regulating combustionin a furnace which consists in moving the point of introduction of fuel or fuel mixture farther into the furnace or vice versa, and changing the relative osition of the openings through which air an fuel are separately introduced, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 11th day of March; A. D. 1905.
