Abstract

8842. Shadbolt, L. P. April 23. Steering.-A vertical rudder for steering an aeroplane machine comprises two rods b c, d e, with stays f covered with fabric. The lower rod is secured to the vertical rod k of the tiller, while the upper rod is pivoted on a bracket o through which the rod k passes. Instead of the tiller rod, cords secured to the end of the rod d e may be used to operate the rudder. The outer ends of the rods are stayed by cords g, h provided with springs q, and the upper rod may have springs to hold it in a central position. When the rudder is operated for steering to the left or right, the lower rod d e moves while the upper rod remains practically stationary, so that the rudder presents a curved inclined surface to the stream of air. This causes the rear part of the aeroplane to be depressed while the front of the aeroplane is raised, and also causes the machine to tilt about a longitudinal axis with the lower side towards the centre of the curve in which the machine is travelling.
