IMPROVEMENT IN SPRlNG-BRACES FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,669, dated July 2, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improve-- ments in Buggy or, Wagon-Spring Braces,
invented by BEN H. STEELE and ROBERT HODGIN, of Barnesville, Belmont county,-Ohio.
Our invention relates to an improved meth- 0d of bracing buggy or other vehicle-springs. Figure 1 is a drawing of our improvement in position on a buggy.
A A is a lever; B B, brace; O G, the fulcrum-block; F, lever-fulcrum; D, pivot by means of whichthe lever is attached and swung to fulcrum-block G G. P P are brace-arms. E is a pivot, bymeans of which the brace-arm P is connected with lever-fulcrum F. O is the buggy-axle N, the reach or coupling-pole. L L is the spring; M, the bottom of buggybed. H is a guide-block. I is the end of lever A A. The lever A A and brace-rod BB are attached together at E by means of pivots, and are attached or swung to the fulcrumblock G G by a pivot at D. When weight is placed upon the bed of buggy M the arms of lever F and brace 1? move in the direction of the dotted lines K K at the same time the end of lever I passes forward through the guideblock H to the place indicated by the dotted lines J. As the buggy-bed M descends the brace-rod B B is lengthened; the lever A A moves forward, thereby taking up the slack of the brace-rod and permitting the spring L L to descend without any rocking motion.
The object of our invention is to give additional strength to, the spring, to save wearing of the spring-lugs, to prevent the splitting of the spring-bars, and to prevent the breaking of the spring-bar bolts, which frequently results from the oscillating motion of the common springs when held only by an iron brace. We make the rod and lever of half-inch or fiveeighths iron.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The attachments for carriage or wagonsprings herein described, consisting of the lever A, forked at F, with the forked brace-rod B P, guide-block H, and fulcrum Gr, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
BEN H. STEELE. ROBERT HODGIN.
