Abstract
1639. Simms, F. R. Jan. 22. S t e e r i n g.-The steering-wheel is so mounted that it can be rotated to actuate the rear vertical rudder and the twisting planes, and can be moved about its extreme lower end in a vertical plane to control the elevating - rudders. The hand-wheel b is fixed to a rod c passing through a sleeve d and provided at its lower end with a pulley h, around which is passed the cord i for actuating the rear rudder and the twisting p l a n e s. The cord i passes through hollow - spindles f mounted in bearings g and connected by a bridge-piece e, which is secured to. the sleeve d. The cord k for actuating the elevating-rudders is secured to an arm j on the spindle f. The sleeve d is locked in any position by projections thereon which engage with notches in spring bars l secured to the frame a of the machine.
