Description

An'NiTED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
JAMES HENRY NUTTALL, 0F HEATON CHAPEL, ENGLAND, ASSIG-NOR T0 JOHN DYMOCK, 0F STOCKPORT, ENGLAND.
CAM-MOTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1.916.
Application led March 21, 1916. Serial No. 85,661.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY NUT- TALL, a Subj ect of the King of Great Britain, residing at Heaton Chapel, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cam-Motions, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionl relates to improvements in cam motions in which a rocking shaft is employed and the cam has the characteristic that all lines extending from periphery to periphery through the center of the cam are of equal length or approximately so; my invention relates in particular to improvements in cam motions for winding machines.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the necessity of a spring or the like for retaining the rocking arm roller on the cam surface and thereby obtain an even motion of the rocking shaft at high speeds. I attain this objectby the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a front view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a plan of the cam motion; Fig. 4 is a detached sectional end view, and Fig. 5 a detached plan of a winding machine to which the cam motion is applied.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The lever arm a is fixed to the rocking shaft b and has a forked end. The forked end carries a spindle c on which a roller Z is rotatably mounted to rise on the cam e rotating with the shaft c. The lever arm f is formed in the same manner as the lever arm a and is fulcrumed on a stationary bracket g. The lever arm y carries a spindle L on which a' roller 1I is rotatably mounted to ride on the cam e at a point diametrically opposite to that at which the roller d rides. lIwo armed levers 7c and Z are oscillatably mounted on the spindle c and tWo armed levers m and n on spindle h. The two armed levers 7c and m are tied together by rods o and the two armed levers Z and n by rods p, by means of nuts g. The roller i 1s prevented from leaving the cam surface owing to the roller a? riding on the opposite point of the cam surface and being connected up to the spindle.
In Figs. i and 5, the lever arm a is fixed on the rocking shaft b of the winding machine and the bracket of the arm a is fixed to the frame 7' of the winding machine. The rocking shaft carries arms s which guide the string, thread or the like to the rotating spindles t of the machine, and owing to the reciprocating motion derived from the cam e on the shaft e, cause the string, thread or the like to be guided onto the spindle in a manner which will produce a cross wound bobbin or the like.
I claim:
1. In a cam motion, a cam, a rocking shaft, a rocking arm on the rocking shaft and operated by the cam, a second rocking arm operated by the cam at a point diametrically opposite that at which the first named rocking shaft is operated and of oscillatable means operatively connecting bothV rocking shafts together, for the hereinbefore specified purpose.
2. Inacam motion, a cam, a rocking arm with one end riding on the cam, a second rocking arm with one end riding at a diametrically opposite point on the cam, a spindle carried by the said end of each rocking arm, a roller mounted on each spindle and riding on the cam, two armed levers oscillatably mounted on the spindles and rods connecting the said two armed levers together in pairs, all combined for the hereinbefore 'specied purpose.
3. In a cam motion for winding machines, the combination with a rocking shaft and a rocking arm, of an idle rocking arm and oscillatable means operatively connecting both rocking arms together, for the hereinbefore specified purpose.
4. In a win-ding machine cam motion, a rocking shaft, a rocking arm on the rocking shaft, winding arms on the rocking shaft, an idle rocking arm riding on the cam at J AMES HENRY NUTTALL.
Vitnesses:
ALFRED BOSSHARDT, STANLEY E., 'BRAMALL a' point diametrically opposite the rocking arm, a spindle on the rocking arm and a spindle on the idle roc-king arm, oseillatable two armed levers 011 the spindles and rods connecting the two armed levers together in pairs, for the hereinbefore speeied purpose.
